More about SCCA Racing in Minnesota
Types of Racing within the SCCA/LOL Region
Club Racing – Our club road racing program is where drivers compete wheel to wheel on dedicated race tracks. In order
to compete, there are licensing requirements in place to keep you safe, while giving you proper skills to build on your talents. There are many different classes, from production based entry level racing to fully modified purpose built machines that are only at home on a dedicated race surface. Club racing is built around the people that put on the events, we are amateurs. Volunteers make it happen. From the friendly faces at registration to technical inspectors, from fire and rescue to corner workers, whether directing traffic or working behind the scenes, our volunteers have the best seat in the house!
Road Rally – Two people (a driver and a navigator) in ordinary cars make up a rally team. A RoadRally is traversed over public roads within the legal speed limit. The challenge is to drive on time, arriving at points along the route neither early nor late (it’s NOT a race). Each team needs a simple watch which can be synchronized to match official time, as well as something to write on and with. Enjoy the Challenge in this contest of precision!
RallyCross – Imagine a scaled down version of a rally stage laid out on a non-paved plot of land where the course is
delineated by traffic cones instead of trees. The entry fees and equipment requirements are considerably less than those necessary to enter any other forms of performance rally, one need only arrive at event registration with a sound, hardtop vehicle and the entry fee. Our region has helmets to loan and will assist the first time competitor with entering the appropriate class, making their way through technical inspection and finding their way around the course.
Solo – Solo events are driving skill contests that emphasize the driver’s ability and the car’s handling characteristics. This is accomplished by driving a course that is designated by traffic cones on a low hazard location, such as a parking lot or inactive airstrip. While speeds are no greater than those normally encountered in legal highway driving, the combination of concentration and car feedback creates an adrenaline pumping experience. It is like being in a movie chase scene, only you are holding onto the steering wheel instead of a box of popcorn!
Track Event – Track Events (formerly PDX) gives drivers an opportunity to drive their street car on a real race track with guidance from a trained instructor. These are untimed events that are great for learning the line and getting instruction from some of the best drivers in our region. No trucks are allowed and there are very specific rules regarding convertibles. We guarantee you’ll end your TE day with a HUGE grin on your face!
Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) is our officially SCCA sanctioned regional track. The track is located in north central Minnesota in a city called Brainerd, roughly 2.5 hours from the Twin Cities. BIR consists of two tracks in one. The historic Donnybrooke Road Coarse is a 10 turn, 3.1 miles in length track that also spans the entire length of the drag strip. When this road course is active, no drag racing can occur. The most commonly used track configuration is the 13 turn, 2.5-mile Competition Road Course. This is the track SCCA events are run on. For more information on BIR, the tracks, or the facility, visit http://www.brainerdraceway.com.
Other Central Division Tracks
Maybe you’re thinking that racing behind the wheel is not for you or maybe you, a friend, or a family member just wants to get closer to the action, that’s great and there is plenty of opportunity to do that as well! Volunteers support our club events and we are always looking for people willing to lend a hand and get in on the action. We have many types of roles that the club needs assistance with and some roles depends on the type of event but we have roles from corner workers/flaggers, course design, communications, emergency, equipment, pit/paddock marshals, race admins and registration, sound control, starters, and timing and scoring to name a few. The club will provide volunteer training for any of the positions. If you are interested in helping our club at any of the events, please reach out to one of our Land O’ Lakes Board of Directors (listed further down in this document). More on Volunteering….
Annual Club Events & Schedule
The LOL region hosts several club races each year at BIR. There are typically a couple of Track Events and a full list of RallyCross and RoadRally events. The club hosts a year end banquet to all members, typically in November. Our full events calendar can be found at https://www.scca-racing.com/calendar.
